Cinque Terre and Pisa tower – Small group tour

A full day trip to the Cinque Terre and the Pisa Tower, with stops at Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza. Come with us on this tour through picturesque coastlines and outstanding sights.

On this tour we will go looking for some true remote authenticity in a small group setting. Only few roads lead to Cinque Terre, making it hard for mass tourism to visit the five fishermen villages perched over the sea. On our way back to Florence, we will stop to Pisa, to see the famous leaning tower.

The steep trail is the original connection between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola, in use until the construction of the famous Via dell’Amore. The route starts at the train station from which, going up the Via Signorini, you arrive at the junction with Via Tracastello on the left, leading into the valley of the Rio Finale stream.
Follow the path signposted along the vegetable gardens until the small bridge from which begins the long flight of steps that leads through cultivated and fallow fields, with a panoramic view, to the ridge of Costa Corniolo. From there you can admire the tip of Montenero eastward, Manarola and the coastline of Cinque Terre westward.
From the ridge of Costa Corniolo, the descent to Manarola begins on the left with the ancient flight of steps, partly in stone and partly hewn out of the rock. It runs down the hill with spectacular views all the way to the village.

Manarola may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, with the cornerstone of the church, San Lorenzo, dating from 1338. The local dialect is Manarolese, which is marginally different from the dialects in the nearby area. The name “Manarola” is probably a dialectical evolution of the Latin, “magna rota”. In the Manarolese dialect this was changed to “magna roea” which means “large wheel”, in reference to the mill wheel in the town. Train from Manarola to Vernazza
